Match Preview |
The England national team will face the Italian national team in the final of Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium, Monday (12/7/2021) at midnight IST.
The Italian national team is chasing its second title after winning the European Cup for the first time in 1968. While the England national team is looking to lift the Euro 2020 trophy, which will also be its first trophy.
The last meeting between Italy and England in a major tournament was in the group stage of the 2014 World Cup. Italy won 2-1. Italy took the lead through Claudio Marchisio's goal in the 35th minute, then England replied through Daniel Sturridge's goal in the 37th minute, and Italy finally won thanks to Mario Balotelli's goal in the 50th minute.
Italy and England have only met twice before in the Euro finals, and the Gli Azzurri have won both.
In the 1980 Euro group stage, Italy beat England 1-0 through Marco Tardelli's single goal. In the quarter-finals of Euro 2012, marshaled by Andrea Pirlo's masterclass and harvest, Italy beat the Three Lions on penalties.
At Euro 2016, England was stopped by Iceland in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Italy was tackled by Germany in the quarter-finals. This time, they both qualified for the top party. England is eyeing their first Euro title, while Italy is aiming for a second title while at the same time treating wounds from failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
Italy reached the final of Euro 2020 after winning Group A and eliminated Austria, Belgium, and Spain to the semifinals. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and playmaker Jorginho were the heroes in the penalty shootout win over La Furia Roja.
On the other hand, England won Group D, then eliminated Germany and Ukraine. Gareth Southgate's team conceded only one goal in the main round of Euro 2020, namely when they won 2-1 over Denmark in the semifinals. In that match against Denmark, they needed an own goal, a foul on Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane's goal following his penalty miss in extra time to ensure themselves through to the final.
The Italian national team is unbeaten at Euro 2020 since the qualifying round. Roberto Mancini's men are also unbeaten in the last 33 matches. Meanwhile, the England national team is very optimistic that the jargon of Football's Coming Home will actually be realized this year.
